US Shoe Size Guide — Men, Women, Kids (with EU/UK)

US shoe size guide illustration

American shoe sizing has a quirk that confuses everyone: men's and women's sizes use different scales. A men's US 7 is a women's US 8.5. If you're shopping on Amazon, Nike, or Zappos and not paying attention to the gender label, you can end up with a shoe that's a full size off.

Men's vs Women's — The 1.5 Size Rule

If you find a great pair only in men's sizing, here's the conversion: **Women's = Men's + 1.5**. So a men's 7 fits a woman who normally wears US 8.5.

This rule works for unisex shoes (sneakers, hiking boots, Vans, Converse). For heels, ballet flats, or shoes with gender-specific lasts, the rule doesn't apply — those are designed for different foot shapes, not just sizes.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are men's and women's US sizes different?

Historical: women's shoes were originally manufactured separately at smaller scales. The 1.5-size offset became standard in the 1900s and stuck. Other countries (EU, UK) often use unisex sizing, which is more logical but feels strange to Americans.

What does '8.5D' mean?

8.5 is the length, D is the width. D = standard men's width or wide women's. B = narrow men's or standard women's. For wide men's, look for 2E or 4E.

How do US kids' sizes work?

Two scales: Toddler (T or C, up to ~13) and Youth (Y, 1Y–7Y). When a child reaches Youth 7Y, they typically transition to adult sizes (Men's 7 or Women's 8.5).
