Extended FAQ

When should I use a barcode vs a QR code?

Barcodes are better for short numeric IDs scanned by laser scanners (retail, warehouses). QR codes are better for arbitrary data, long URLs, and smartphone-based scanning.

Can I get a UPC for my product?

Yes β€” but you need to register with GS1 (the international body that issues product codes). EllyTools generates the visual barcode; the underlying number must be your registered UPC.

Are my codes stored?

No β€” runs entirely in your browser.

About Barcode Types

Code 128 is the most versatile barcode format, supporting all 128 ASCII characters. It is widely used in shipping, packaging, and inventory management.

Code 39 supports uppercase letters, digits, and a few special characters. It is commonly used in automotive and defense industries.

EAN-13 and EAN-8 are used for retail product identification worldwide. UPC-A is the North American equivalent. ITF-14 is used for packaging levels above the individual product.
