Word and Character Count — Targets for Tweets, Essays, Blogs, and Theses
Twitter caps at 280 characters. The Common App essay tops out at 650 words. SEO blogs sit best around 1,500–2,500 words. Each kind of writing has its 'right length' — and the way counters measure differs enough that the same essay can come back with three different word counts.
Recommended length by type
| Content type | Target length | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| X (Twitter) post | Up to 280 characters | Per tweet |
| Instagram caption | Up to 2,200 characters | 200+ truncates with 'more' |
| LinkedIn post | 150–600 words | Sweet spot for engagement |
| Tweet thread | 5–10 tweets | Longer threads see drop-off |
| Common App essay (US college) | Max 650 words | Strict limit |
| SEO blog post | 1,500–2,500 words | Standard ranking target |
| Deep-dive blog post | 3,000–5,000 words | Tends to rank stronger |
| Master's thesis chapter | 8,000–15,000 words | Field-dependent |
| PhD dissertation | 60,000–100,000 words | Highly field-dependent |
Four different ways to count
**Characters with spaces**: Most common in social media limits and language-agnostic counts.
**Characters without spaces**: Used in print pricing and translation rates.
**Words**: Standard for English writing. A word is roughly 5 characters including the trailing space.
**Sentences and paragraphs**: For readability analysis. Aim for 15–20 word sentences in most prose.

Real-time word, character (with/without spaces), sentence, and paragraph count. Keep it open while writing to stay within limits.

Filling out vs trimming down
**Need more length?** Replace abstract statements with concrete examples. 'I worked hard' → 'I woke up at 6 AM daily to memorize 30 vocabulary words before class.' Same meaning, 5× the length.
**Need to cut?** Strip adverbs and weak adjectives. 'Very difficult' → 'difficult'. 'Somewhat insufficient' → 'insufficient'. Then look for repeated ideas across paragraphs and merge them.
**Sweet spot is 90–95% of the limit.** For a 650-word essay, aim for 600–620. For a 1,500-word piece, aim for 1,350–1,425. Looks deliberate, leaves room to revise without trimming.
Frequently asked questions
Do essays count whitespace?
Common App and most US colleges count words, not characters. Korean and Japanese applications often count characters with spaces. Always check the specific application's rules.
Are emojis one character or more?
Display-wise, one character. Encoding-wise, often 2–4 bytes. SMS messages count emojis differently depending on the encoding — one emoji can consume 2–4 character slots.
How do I compare a Korean essay to an English one?
Roughly: 1 Korean character ≈ 0.4 English words. A 1,000-character Korean essay is comparable in length to a ~400-word English one.
