Wonder Weeks Calculator: Tracking Baby's Mental Leaps
The Wonder Weeks is a developmental theory that babies go through 10 'mental leaps' in their first 20 months — periods of rapid cognitive change marked by fussiness and clinginess, followed by new skills. This calculator shows where your baby is in the cycle.
Developed by Dutch researchers Frans Plooij and Hetty van de Rijt in the 1990s, the Wonder Weeks framework describes 10 predictable 'leaps' in the first 20 months of life. Each leap is preceded by a 'stormy' period of fussiness and disrupted sleep, and followed by 'sunny' weeks where the baby has new abilities.
The schedule is calculated from the original due date (40 weeks gestational age), not from actual birth date — so premature babies' leaps are adjusted for their corrected age. This calculator handles that conversion automatically.
The 10 leaps
| Leap | Approx. age (weeks from due date) | New ability |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | ~5 weeks | Sensing patterns; eye contact |
| 2 | ~8 weeks | Recognizing simple events |
| 3 | ~12 weeks | Smooth transitions; smiling on cue |
| 4 | ~19 weeks | Categorizing — picking up patterns of objects |
| 5 | ~26 weeks | Understanding relationships; object permanence beginnings |
| 6 | ~37 weeks | Categorizing groups; classifying |
| 7 | ~46 weeks | Sequences — putting actions in order |
| 8 | ~55 weeks | Programs — multi-step plans |
| 9 | ~64 weeks | Principles — flexible thinking |
| 10 | ~75 weeks | Systems — self-awareness |
What 'stormy' periods actually look like
Before each leap, babies often show what parents call 'the 3 C's': **Crying** more than usual, **Clingy** behavior (won't let you leave the room), and **Cranky** moods. Sleep regressions, appetite changes, and rejection of routines are also common. These can last a few days to a few weeks.
After the leap, the baby usually displays a new skill — recognizing patterns, mimicking, sitting up, taking first steps. The reward for surviving the storm is real developmental progress.
What this calculator helps with
- •Showing whether your baby is currently in a 'stormy' or 'sunny' phase based on age.
- •Predicting when the next leap is likely to begin.
- •Adjusting for prematurity using corrected age.
- •Helping parents not blame themselves for sudden behavior changes — leaps often coincide with what looks like sleep regression or 'bad days.'
Extended FAQ
Is the Wonder Weeks theory scientifically validated?
It's based on observational research and is widely used by parents. Mainstream developmental science recognizes that babies go through periods of rapid change, but the exact 10-leap schedule is a popular framework rather than a clinical certainty. Useful as a parenting heuristic; not a substitute for pediatric guidance.
Should I worry if my baby doesn't follow the schedule exactly?
No. Real babies vary by ±1–3 weeks from the calendar averages. Some leaps are dramatic; others barely register. As long as your pediatrician is happy with overall development, exact leap timing doesn't matter.
Why use due date instead of birth date?
Brain development corresponds to gestational maturity rather than time outside the womb. Premature babies catch up to their original due-date schedule for cognitive milestones.
Are my baby's dates stored?
No — runs entirely in your browser.
