YouTube Thumbnail Preview: Designing for Click-Through
Thumbnails are the most important visual decision a YouTuber makes — they decide whether anyone clicks. This previewer shows your design at the actual sizes it'll appear in search, suggested videos, and home page.
YouTube displays thumbnails at very different sizes — full-resolution on the watch page, postage-stamp size in search, somewhere in between in the suggested column. A thumbnail that reads at 1280×720 may be unreadable at 246×138 (search size).
Thumbnail design principles
- •Test at 246×138 — if you can't read the text, it's too small
- •High contrast — bright colors against simpler backgrounds
- •Faces and emotion drive clicks (assuming relevant)
- •Keep text to 3–5 words — more is unreadable at small sizes
- •Make it consistent with your channel's other thumbnails for brand recognition
