Social Media Image Resizer: Hitting Each Platform's Size

The same photo needs a different size in every place you post it. Skip the resize and the platform crops for you, and its judgement about what to cut has no opinion about where the faces are.

Upload an image to a social platform and it will be made to fit. Wrong aspect ratio and it gets cropped; too small and it gets stretched until it is soft. Neither is what you wanted.

This tool carries the current sizes for the major platforms, so you pick the placement, drop the image in, and get it at the right dimensions.

Instagram's profile grid is no longer square

This is where older advice goes wrong. The thumbnails on a profile changed from 1:1 to 3:4 portrait tiles.

That inverts the trade-off. A 4:5 feed upload (1080 Γ— 1350) survives the grid nearly intact, losing about 3% from each side. A 1:1 square loses 12.5% from each side, and a landscape post around 30%.

If you want to control how a post sits in the grid, use the Profile Grid (3:4) preset. And leave your breathing room at the left and right edges β€” not the top and bottom, which is what the square-grid era called for.

Enlarging a small image cannot be undone

Feed an image smaller than the target and it has to be stretched, which means inventing pixels that were never captured. Blowing a 640-pixel image up to a 1280 thumbnail cannot add detail the original did not hold.

So start from the largest original you have and work downwards. Reducing throws information away and looks clean; enlarging makes information up and does not.

Photos from a phone are larger than any of these targets, so they are never the problem. Images pulled off the web or dug out of an old folder are.

These sizes keep changing

Platforms redesign their layouts regularly and the recommended dimensions move with them. Instagram's grid going from square to portrait is the clearest recent example.

So rather than trusting the numbers in an old blog post, post something that matters and look at it. For Instagram in particular, the preview tool will show you how a given image gets cropped in the feed and in the grid before you commit to it.

What size should I use for Instagram?

1080 Γ— 1350 (4:5). It takes the most screen space in the feed and loses only about 3% per side to the 3:4 profile grid, so it beats square in both places.

What happens to an image with a different aspect ratio?

It is fitted to the target size. The further its ratio is from the target, the more gets cut, so keep anything important away from the edges.

Will resizing hurt quality?

Not noticeably when reducing. Quality only suffers when the original is smaller than the target and has to be enlarged.

Are my images uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser and nothing is transmitted.
